On writing in Singapore:
"It is a good breeding ground for writing because it’s at the crossroads both geographically and culturally. We are also on the cusp of another era – post-globalisation and the beginning of the end of neo-liberalism. There are so many issues and stories swirling around under the surface that haven’t been adequately written about or dealt with. Our stories are as complex, if not more than the West. In terms of encouraging young writers, Singapore is a good place because you have strong independent publishers who have firm ideas and values. There are definitely more opportunities now but I do think we need more of a critical culture. We can also bring Singaporean books to various parts of Asia, at the same time opening up more conversations between Asian writers and building cultural bridges."
